The Brief
Like millions of others around the world, we have been gripped by the Netflix phenomenon that is the 1980s supernatural thriller, Stranger Things. We won’t drop any spoilers here, but the cliff hanger at the finale of season 4 has left us counting down the days until season 5 is released! The hit show features gloriously inventive and incredibly distinctive set pieces, so when we were approached by Jess Randal from TLC to create bespoke props for a bar mitzvah that had a Stranger Things theme, we were thrilled!
Jess gave us a detailed brief on what was required for this event. The requested props/styled areas were:
We were under no illusions we would have to create these Stranger Things props to the highest possible standard, utilising all of our skill sets. So with that in mind, we happily set to work!
The Solution
When we are approached to create bespoke props for an event, we are able to suggest what materials and techniques will be required based on the client’s brief. But there are some projects where it is necessary for us to visit the venue so we are absolutely sure that our ideas can come to fruition. So it proved with this Stranger Things event! After meeting with the customer at the venue, along with other suppliers, we were able to make our final technical decisions. And so began the real fun, beginning the creative process to bring our Stranger Things props to life.
Our first challenge was to source the correct materials that matched the era Stranger Things is set in, ie the early 1980s. We found the ideal 80s-style floral wallpaper, vintage Christmas lights and matching furniture. For the breaking-through wall, we had to be at the top of our game to find the best technique and materials, allowing us to make a piece that was relevant to Stranger Things, would make an impact, but that was light enough to carry and was safe for an event with lots of people around the piece. In fact, we actually made the breaking-through wall so big we had trouble getting it out of our studio!
The Outcome
After a lot of fun making them, we finally finished our Stranger Things props and were ready to take them to the event. The event was a complete success, in no small part (we like to think) due to our Stranger Things props that really made the guests feel like they were in Hawkins, Indiana in the 1980s. The client was delighted with our efforts, which is always the ultimate result whenever we approach a project!
